We spoke to PhD student Ana Nimac, whose job, she says, is to ‘find a common bean that can withstand drought conditions and can be a desirable source of genes for further breeding programs’.

Description of activity: Within the framework of “Activity 2: Olive Phenotyping” a greenhouse experiment was set up at the Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation in Split. The experiment was set up with 26 different olive genotypes (10 wild, 12 introduced and 4 autochthonous). The plants were planted in a mixture of inorganic substrates (perlite: vermiculite – 1: 1 (v / v)) in pots of 3.6 liters. Plants are irrigated with ½ Hoagland solution (control) and after the adaptation, treatments with salt (150 mM NaCl) and drought will be applied.

The presentation of the research project entitled ‘Biodiversity and Molecular Plant Breeding’ was held at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture on September 12th, 2018. The project has been granted to the Centre of Excellence for Biodiversity and Molecular Plant Breeding (CroP-BioDiv).

Mrs Smiljana Goreta Ban, PhD. was the moderator of the presentation.

The welcoming speeces have been delivered by the academician Franjo Tomić, president of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, professor Zoran Grgić, PhD., Dean of the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture and associated professor Zvonimir Zdunić, PhD., director of the Agricultural Institute Osijek.

Professor Zlatko Šatović, PhD., the project leader presented the overall aims and goals of the project. Mr. Dario Novoselović, PhD. presented the research on three main crops grown in Croatia (maize, wheat, soybean), Ms. Tatjana Klepo, PhD. explained the research that will be carried out concerning grape vine and olive, and professor Zlatko Liber talked about neglected crops that include Brassicas, Alliums, common bean, Dalmatian sage and Dalmatina pyrethrum. As the repesentative of PhD. students and post-docs Ms. Petra Štambuk, M.Sc. reported on current status of the newly employed scientific stuff.

Prof. dr. sc. Zlatko Šatović visited dr. sc. Carlotu Vaz Patto, Head of PlantX at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB), Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal.

Professor Šatović and Dr Vaz Patto signed the Letter of Agreement with the intention of scientific collaboration in the framework of the project KK.01.1.1.01.0005 Biodiversity and Molecular Plant Breeding led by CoE CroP-BioDiv that will include the exchange of plant material, phenotyping and genotyping of common bean accessions as well as statistical analysis of molecular and agronomic data as anticipated by the project proposal within the Project Element 7. Assistant professor Ivan Šoštarić  from the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Agriculture visited the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture in the framework of the project entitled Molecular and Phytochemical Characterization by RAMAN Spectroscopy of Economically Importan Indigenous Medicinal Plants (Croatia-Serbia Cooperation in Science and Technology). Professor Šoštarić collaborates with CroP-BioDiv Dalmatian pyrethrum and Salvias Working Group lead by Professor Zlatko Liber, University of Zagreb, Faculty of Science on biochemical characterization of Dalmatian pyrethrum germplasm.

Dr. sc. Angjelina Belaj  and dr. sc. Raul de la Rosa  researches at The Andalusian Institute of Research and Training in Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Ecological Production (IFAPA), Center “Alameda del Obispo”, Córdoba, Spain  visited the Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation, Split. Dr Belaj and dr de la Rosa are experts in olive genetics responsible for the maintenance of the World Olive Germplasm Bank of Córdoba (WOGBC), one of the world’s largest collections of olive germplasm collaborating with CroP-BioDiv Olive Working Group lead by Dr Tatjana Klepo, Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation, Split. During their stay in Croatia dr Belaj and dr de la Rosa gave lectures on Prospection, Conservation and Management of Olive Genetic Resources in an International Olive Germplasm Collection and Utilization of Olive Genetic Resources in Olive Breeding.

Academy of Agricultural Sciences has been founded on June 8th, 2017 in Zagreb. Professor Frane Tomić, member of the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts (HAZU) , has been elected the first president and 128 scientists became regular members of the newly founded scientific society dedicated to the advancement of agricultural sciences.

CoE CroP-BioDiv welcomes the establishment and its members will support the activities initiated by the Academy. Ten CoE CroP-BioDiv scientists became regular members of the Academy: Dean Ban, Smiljana Goreta Ban, Jasminka Karoglan Kontić, Edi Maletić, Dario Novoselović, Slavko Perica, Aleksandra Sudarić, Zlatko Šatović, Domagoj Šimić i Karolina Vrandečić.

Professor Zlatko Šatović visited dr. sc. Carlotu Vaz Patto , Head of PlantX at the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB), a scientific research and advanced training institute of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal. Dr Carlota Vaz Patto is an expert in quantitative crop genetics and molecular plant breeding collaborating with CroP-BioDiv Common Bean Working Group lead by Dr Klaudija Carović-Stanko. During his stay at ITQB Professor Zlatko Šatović gave lectures on Modern Strategies in Plant Breeding for the students of the International PhD program in Plant Sciences – Plants for Life  and held the seminar on Genetic Demography of Dalmatian sage (Salvia officinalis L.): A Journey to the Past  during which he explained the structure and objectives of CroP-BioDiv and invited the researchers from ITQB to collaborate.
